My friend Randall Munroe is a wonder. He is more than just ridiculously smart; he knows how to access all that wonderful knowledge stored in his brain, combine various pieces of it, and then present it in innovative ways that somehow make complex issues easy to understand, and even fun. In a recent issue of his web comic Xkcd he tackles global warming, and literally turns it sideways.

I spent some time trying to recreate the Kantar Information is Beautiful Gold Data Visualization winning entry on global warming in Tableau. It was an interesting exercise and I wanted to share how I did it and some key insights from this process. Here is a screenshot of the original visualization by Randall Munroe, titled “A timeline of Earth’s Average Temperature”. Here is a screenshot of my Tableau replication. After a quick internet search, I found the official xkcd font : it is awesome. With the font installed I was ready to build something and the Global warming viz immediately came to mind. From a style perspective, my key takeaways were: 1 Annotations are really important and I need to use them more This is a really long visualization which I imagine was done intentionally to emphasize the length of the timescale. How do you make the reader keep scrolling? Keep them interested in the story and want to keep going.
Thankfully, the ever amusing xkcd comic has just released a new visualization showing just how misleading this statement can be. The darling of scientists and nerds everywhere, Munroe has knack for humorously and insightfully illustrating complex scientific topics. From fun themes like time travel to foundational scientific concepts like DNA , Munroe has dabbled across disciplines. As you continue to scroll down and down and down, it becomes obvious that past climatic changes progress slowly and incrementally.
The sudden final veer to the right at the bottom of the graphic, which represents human-caused climate change, is a stunning contrast to the otherwise minute changes. With two climate items of note headlining the news this week, the new comic could not have been timed any better.

I took a lot of simple problems that you might encounter in everyday life, like the hassle of packing to move or how to make friends with people. How much would that cost? When I hear a question like that, I just need to know the answer and so I think I sort of stopped on the sidewalk and started researching lava heat flow and the engineering involved in keeping a moat of lava hot so that I could come up with a price estimate. Interviewer: Benjamin Thompson Well, Randall, what does your sort of research process look like?
Do you start with a blank piece of paper and a question mark at the top? At one point, I remember I wanted to find out whether or not pollen, when it falls from trees, is particularly flammable. Well, what is the value of talking about, well, the absurd, in many cases? You talk about opening water bottles with a nuclear bomb to fill up a swimming pool, for example.

The picture he shows is the result of the way temperature and proxy data are handled by most of the climatological community. The plot purportedly shows the average global temperature, presumably measured right above the surface, beginning in 20, BC and ending in the future at AD. By the birth of Christ, a. Skip it. There is ample reason to distrust these predictions. And this was long before the first barrel of oil was ever turned into gasoline and burned in life-saving internal combustion engines.
We should not be looking at lines, which imply perfect certainty, but blurry swaths that indicate uncertainty. The temperature at 20, BC was, Munroe claims, surely after referring to expert sources, about 4. Was it actually 4. How do we know?

Was in Melbourne a week ago for two days of 45C F. The heat radiated off every surface, unreal! The commentary there was that more of these days can be expected with global warming. Looking at GW from an Aussie perspective it is fairly scary, more water from cyclones in the north, and extreme dries with bush fires everywhere else. A couple of degrees and the place becomes pretty untenable for inland agriculture, and coastal cities will have water supply problems.
Meanwhile Melbourne sprawls and everybody needs a car you could not live without one and expect to get to work etc, its all predicated on automobiles, just like Auckland. The traffic is horrendous and the CO2 generated is huge. It is all a death spiral, they cant leave their cars even if they want to. Never used and no forseeable need to — but almost bankrupted the state…..
